What now? Beth nawr?

Giving bone marrow in order to potentially save someone's life, is a big ask! The first text to the taken the tubes out at the end of the donation, is a long process, but leaves you with a really good feeling and you've hopefully saved someone's life, as well as changed their family's life! From now on I will have regular check up phone calls from the Welsh Blood Service and wait to hear if the transplant helped the patient.

If you're happy to help someone, there are many ways to do so!

Image result for welsh blood serviceSigning up to the bone marrow donation registry is the simplest way. If you already give blood, next time you do and they ask 'can we take an extra sample to add to the bone marrow register?', why not say yes? You may never get asked to donate, you may be waiting years until the text, but if you're the best match and are healthy enough, you could be saving a life! Currently, some patients will never find a match, therefore every person on the register is a vital step towards a potential cure for more patients!

Mae rhoi mêr esgyrn, er mwyn gobeithio arbed bywyd rhwyun, yn ofyn mawr! O'r neges cyntaf i'r tiwbniau'n dod allan yn broses hynod o hir, ond mae'n eich gadael gyda theimlad arbennig - a gobeithio'ch bod wedi arbed bywyd rhywun a newid bywyd eu teulu cyfan.

Ond nid yw'n ofyn mawr dweud ie i ymuno gyda'r gofrestr, efallai newch chi fyth orfod rhoi o'ch gwirfodd!

If you don't give blood and you can, please do! There is an endless list of reasons why someone would need a blood transfusion - from cancer patients, to anaemic patients, to tiny babies born prematurely to mothers who have bled post birth or anyone having lost a large amount of blood during trauma or surgery. The list is endless and the current pool of donors in comparison is small. Some people chose to give platelets or plasma - other essential blood components.

HomeDespite being on the Welsh Bone Marrow Registry, I was also on Anthony Nolan's register. All they ask you to do, is spit into a tube and then your record stays on their database until you're found as a potential match. DKMS is another similar database.

The process of signing up couldn't be easier!

Ni allai fod yn haws!

Another, much less common way to give bone marrow donation, is donate cord blood after giving birth, as it contains stem cells that can be used to treat leukaemias.

If none of this appeals to you, then why not raise fun or volunteer to raise awareness. Run a marathon, climb a mountain, bake (and eat) cake, keep quiet for a day......another endless list! Marrow is the student volunteering, fundraising and awareness campaign for Anthony Nolan and they do amazing work in promoting bone marrow donation and awareness of leukaemia.

Rhedwch filltiroedd, coginiwch gacen, cau ceg am oriau, neidio allan o awyren, siafio pen - rhestr di diwedd am sut i godi arian, a'r cyfan er mwyn helpu eraill!

Mae llawer iawn o ffyrdd i helpu, gan gynnwys cleifion sydd angen mêr esgyrn......
- rhoi gwaed
- ymuno gyda'r gofrestr rhoi mêr esgyrn (manylion uchod)
- rhoi gwaed llinyn y gar
- gwirfoddoli
- codi arian

Hopefully, but we may never know, the transplant is currently helping the patient live a long and healthy life! Gobeithio, ond efallai na fyddwn fyth wybod, bod y trawsblaniad yn helpu'r claf fyw bywyd hir a hapus!

To the patient: I hope this donation has changed your life as much as helping you has changed me!

I'r claf: Gobeithiaf bod y trawsblaniad wedi newid eich bywyd, a bywyd eich teulu er gwell, gymaint a mae'r broses wedi fy newid i!
